Mizz Absurd

Jill Avilez (Mizz Absurd)

Location: Northridge, CA.
Occupation: Musician

Mizz Absurd, born and raised in Hollywood, CA, shares her soul, scat, slap solo bass in an act that features both spoken word and music about life, love, and experience.  Her live shows, which she narrates in philosophical, poetic metaphor, are picking up momentum in many new venues in Los Angeles and beyond.  Her debut single “Fall Inside” is available for streaming and download.

Mizz Absurd is currently collecting new material for her debut album and when asked why do you choose the art of music she stated :

“Art is our way to rebel against the absurd.” -Albert Camus

I grew up surrounded by different types of music, movies, literature, poetry and art. My innate ability to write, tell stories, and perform overshadowed my passion for science and other trades.  As a child and young adult I had to fight to be taken seriously.  Life situations, including deep depression, pushed me to the limits of the sanctuary that only art and the creation of art provided. People often misconceive art to be a “dream” but it is the way I survive.  My studies in philosophy taught me that life may be absurd, but the act of creating rebels the absurd.  The absurd is clear reasoning recognizing its limits. Art has no limits. Art is open to interpretation.  Art presents an outlet for unique expression that challenges individuals to cross the boundaries of their comfort zones. Like philosophy and life, art and everything is built from experience. Every piece is a product of the internal struggle between imagination and a new perspective of reality. I choose to embrace the absurd. I create art to live.

How did you decide on the stage name, Mizz Absurd?

First and foremost, I am the Captain of The Love Absurd Unidentified Airline. My funk band is Jill Avilez and The Love Absurd, so I am Mizz Absurd. I play electric guitar in my funk band and upright bass in my solo act.  I have played upright bass off and on for years, but I still consider it very new to me.  Part of my decision to use the name Mizz Absurd is based on concepts of the absurd and the existential philosophy of Albert Camus and Jean-Paul Sartre, as well as John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme. I’ve been dealt a Love Absurd instead of a Love Supreme.

In The Love Absurd, I used to play electric guitar and use a lot of sound effects, pedals and amps to create an outer space themed performance art.  When I became Mizz Absurd (solo bass and voice), I felt like my spaceship crashed.  I still feel like I’m trying to slap this wood thang back together again.  The music of Mizz Absurd became organic and intimate.  Everything I’m doing now, I’ve never done before.

I’m honestly still getting to know Mizz Absurd. This is bringing out a whole new side of my art and creativity.  The performance is different every time. Stay tuned for future versions.

What are you working on right now?

I’m currently involved in a few music projects around Los Angeles. You can also catch me singing with Norwood Fisher (Fishbone) in an all-star funk ensemble, Trulio Disgracias. I am also Saturn, a part of Squid & Saturn, an electronic duo project with albums available for streaming and download at www.finegritmusic.com.

I choose art because of the space between it, its artists, and its audience. This powerful gap intertwines intention and interpretation in a way that defines and challenges cultural narratives and reveals and distorts realities. Art creates room for interaction and reflection. I choose art because I want to learn and listen. I choose art because I have something to say.
